Christmas Concert

Concert poster

The Harrison Singers and Band will be making a welcome return to Nunthorpe, performing in St Mary’s Church at 7.30pm on Friday 15th December 2017.

The twenty-strong wind-band will play a rousing selection of seasonal pieces, but by way of variation, the programme will include  a medley of songs from Porgy and Bess, the 1935 opera by George Gershwin, and The Infernal Galop from Jacques Offenbach's Orpheus in the Underworld (more popularly known as the Can-Can) - unfortunately space will prevent any of the familiar actions that frequently accompany this music! The programme will also include some well-known carols for the audience to sing.

During the interval, when refreshments will be served by our own Social Events Team (SET), the band will be replaced by the fifty-strong Singers. The Singers will then perform the very beautiful Christmas Cantata Love Transcending by John Peterson, with guest soloists Cat and Andy Cutler (Please note that contingency plans will be in place should a new member of the family make an unscheduled early appearance.). Narration will be by choir/band member Shelagh Campbell.

The programme will end with the choir giving a ‘world premier’ performance of the very evocative A Chant for Christmas, composed by Joe Slowther - a member of the band (flautist) and choir (bass).

The music, the setting and the acoustics of the church should make this an atmospheric and thoughtful lead-up to our celebration of the Holy Birth at Christmas, and complement the various acts of worship being held at the hall and in the church – please see the Christmas page for further details.

Tickets are £6.00, available from Rookwood News, members of the Harrison Singers and Band, and members of SET. Due to space limitations at the church, purchase of tickets in advance is highly recommended. Proceeds are in aid of church funds.

The Harrison Singers and Band meet weekly on Friday afternoons, except during school holidays, at St Andrews United Reform Church in Cypress Road, Marton. Anyone interested in joining either the choir (1:15pm until 2:15pm) or the wind band (2.45pm until 3:45pm), or both, should contact Leigh Harrison at in the first instance. New members for Tenor and Bass parts are always very welcome, but there is currently limited space availability for further Soprano/Alto members. There are no auditions for either the choir or band. The group normally perform three concerts per year at a variety of venues around Teesside.
